Free Throws Lift Imperials To Region Qualifier

Free throws, 21-31 (68%) were a key which helped lift the Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter girls’ basketball team past the South Border Mustangs. In District 2 loser out action, the Imperials, the #6 seed and the Mustangs the #7 seed, had NGS win 48-41 last Sat., Feb. 15 in Jamestown.

The Imperials got on the board first and held a 4-2 lead before SB senior Eva Meyer hit from downtown to lift the Mustangs out in front 4-5. The Imperials then went on a scoring spurt, led by senior Ali Gross who had six of her team high 13 points in this frame, as the Imperials held the Mustangs scoreless the remainder of the quarter while the Imperials tallied 11, to hold a 15-5 lead after the first eight minutes.

In the second frame NGS head coach Paul Erbele and his squad managed to hold onto the lead. Senior Jada Schwartzenberger hit a trey with 2:30 to play in the half to move NGS out in front 21-11. The half closed with the Imperials holding a 9-point, 24-15 lead.

After the break the Imperials had trouble scoring early as SB was within 4, 24-20 at the 6:20 mark. It wasn’t until just under six minutes that NGS eighth grader Hope Gross . . .
