Imperials Advance To Quarterfinals
With a 66-12 first round playoff win, the Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter 9-man football team advances to the quarterfinals next Saturday in Napoleon where they will face the 10-0 Alexander Comets with a 2:00 p.m. start. Last year the Imperials beat the Comets in the first round of playoffs by a score of 36-22.
In action last Sat., Oct. 24 the Imperials played host to Towner-Granville-Upham Titans. The Imperials entered the contest at 8-1 while the Titans came in at 7-2. On the day the Imperials racked up 302 yards through the air and 265 yards on the ground. The NGS defense only allowed the Titans 51 yards on the ground and 131 yards through the air.
After a slow start offensively by both teams it wasn’t until the Imperials third possession of the first quarter that they found pay dirt when senior quarterback Bryce Schneider carried over from 15-yards out to get NGS on the board. Sophomore Jose Castellanos-Reyes kicked the extra point, as the Imperials were on the board at the 4:15 mark of the first quarter, holding a 7-0 lead. On TGU’s next possession the Imperials caused a fumble which was recovered by Bryce Schneider near midfield. Two plays later senior Jackson Piatz weaved his way down the field eluding would-be tacklers for a 41-yard TD. Schneider carried for the 2-point conversion, as the Imperials led 15-0 with 1:45 to play in the first stanza. The Titans didn’t waste any time answering the Imperials last score as on the very next play from scrimmage QB Fynn Livedalen found Oliver Sveet for a 71-yard TD. On the 2-point conversion the Titans fumbled the ball which was recovered by Imperial Andre Doll.
Following the kickoff the Imperials then set up shop on their 40-yard line. NGS head coach Jamison Fettig and his squad then put together a 10-play drive which extended into the second quarter. This drive was capped when QB Schneider carried on a reverse play for a 15-yard TD. Schneider found Jackson Piatz through the air for the 2-point conversion and a 23-6 lead with just under two minutes gone in the second frame. After another Imperial defensive stop, the Titans punted the ball which resulted in a touchback. Two plays later the Imperial offense once again found pay dirt as QB Schneider found sophomore wide receiver Bradley Hottman for a 46-yard score. Castellanos-Reyes kicked the extra point as NGS led 30-6 with 7:43 to play in the first half.
