Imperials Get District 2 Win
After an 8-game losing streak the Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter girls’ basketball team picked up a 50-42 win over District 2 rival, the South Border Mustangs.
In action last Thurs., Jan. 16 in Napoleon the first half was a tight one. Early in the first quarter SB starter Camden Wiest went down with a knee injury and was lost for the game. The Imperials held a 4-0 lead at the 5:23 mark in the first. The Mustangs then tallied 5-straight to hold a 4-5 lead with just over three minutes to play and they extended that lead to hold a 4-8 lead on a trey by Haley Kaseman at the 1:48 mark. The first quarter and game were plagued with fouls. In the first quarter the Imperials were only 1-6 from the charity stripe, but were still in the game as they trailed 7-8 at the first stop.
The second quarter NGS head coach Paul Erbele saw his squad take the lead at 11-8 with just over a minute gone in the second quarter. The Mustangs then went on an 0-8 run, to hold a 11-16 margin with 5:00 minutes left in the first half. The Imperial defense then stepped up to hold the Mustangs at bay, as NGS tallied 6-straight of the quarters 19 points to hold a 17-16 lead. With one minute to play the game was knotted at 21. The Imperials closed out the first half by scoring 5 to hold a 26-22 lead. South Border’s Macy Monson scored 13 of her game high 22 points in the first half and reached a career milestone by netting her 1,000th career point in this half.
